It was the spring of 2014 when former skater Veronica Macintosh learned she was in the fight of her life, battling stage 4 breast cancer. This incredible skater and synchro fan passed away last Wednesday March 15th. Jura Synchro paid tribute to her.

For the past two years Veronica competed with the Whitby Ice Fyre Adult 1 team, and previously with British Columbia’s Ice X Perience, who performed a touching tribute to Veronica and her story in the 2017 season “To Veronica With Love”. The heartfelt tribute to Veronica had the skating community on their feet, cheering on Veronica as she continued to battle cancer.

It goes without saying that synchro is a team sport, but Veronica’s family is involved in many ways with the Whitby Ice Fyre club. Her daughter Paige skates on the Pre Novice team, her husband Adam plays music for the Adult I team and is undoubtedly their biggest supporter. Veronica and Adam’s son Conall was always happy to help with music and arrangements to make sure Veronica and Adam could be at Adult I practices throughout the year.

On March 10th and 11th Veronica spent two packed days at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, certainly a familiar venue for all Canadian synchro skaters, watching the ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships. It is thanks to Sherry- Lynn Zuro, human resource manager at Skate Canada for extending an invitation to Veronica and three friends to attend the event free of charge and cheer on the world’s top junior teams, all of which Veronica did not miss.

Her dream came true in Mississauga at Junior Worlds

—  Melissa, a friend of Veronica

"She was the strongest woman I have ever met and fought so hard against her battle with cancer. Her love of synchro and passion for skating meant the world to her, and she spent her last weekend attending the Junior World Synchro Championships in Mississauga, which she said was a "dream come true" as she did not think she would make it as far as she did as her condition declined rapidly over the last few months when the cancer spread to her brain. I feel so lucky to have had the chance to meet such a special woman", wrote Melissa, one of her friend.

We are reaching out to the synchro community and far beyond to ask for support in helping the Macintosh family. Donations will be put towards medical bills, funeral costs and educational expenses for Paige and Conall. Proceeds can be donated here.

Although Veronica may not have achieved her dream of making it to the 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, throughout her lifetime she touched so many people, never backing down from a challenge and taking everything life had to throw her way.
