The first national synchronized skating competition took place on Sunday, December 2 in Mentana, a town in Rome located 29 km from the capital and home to the only skating rink in south-central Italy. The competition day was long and intense. 21 teams from different parts of the country skated. For many of them, it was the first time their program was presented.
The Senior and Junior categories had the opportunity to present an improved program following comments received at the Trento Cup last month. Some teams like Ice Diamonds, Flying Angels and Shining Blades have improved their total score.
In the Junior category, the Shining Blades team has achieved a well balanced short program with a good interpretation of the music. Despite some inaccuracies in the free program, they finished in the lead with a total score of 96.32 points and won the competition. Following a free program very "addictive", the Flying Angels get 82.00 points in total and placed second. The third place finally was for the Ice Diamonds: a deduction of four points was counted in the scores for an excess interruption and a fall.
With a score of 51.91 points, the Advanced Novice Hot Shivers team surpassed Shining Blades who made a total of 45.22.
The Basic Novice category was the most important division and the competition was the fiercest: the Flying Angels missed the podium for 0.13 point, but got the best technical score. It was the Shining Blades team that finished in first place. The "roaring" skaters presented difficult elements and elegant transitions on the Lion King's music. Finalists, the Ladybirds have made a perfect program on the soundtrack of Zorro. Nice performance also for the Ice Diamonds. The skaters presented a program on the music of "Nightmare Before Christmas" and won the bronze medal with 25.39 points. The Frost Fairies of Varese scored 23.79 points and the Crazy Splinters finished with 21.17 points.
The winner of the Cadets division? Hot Shivers of course! Andrea Gilardi's Milan synchro team delighted the audience and the judges with smooth skating without falling. The Ladybirds took second place as they started their season.
Two teams only in Juveniles. The first place went to the Mini Ice Angels which featured ten beautiful witches (21.33 points) and the second place was for the Shining Blades, with 17.91 points.
Now is the time to tell you about the Open Trophy.
Only one team skated in the Mixed Age category under 15 years old. Trento's Ice On Fire scored 36.58 points overall.
In Mixed Age over 15 years, all teams finished close in the scores. Let's start with Crazy Splinters, the host team, who performed very well and took third place. Pity for three falls and the music violation times deduction but the team skated with a beautiful speed and with precision on the music of the Jungle Book in incredible dresses. The winners of the category were Alta Badia's Ice Angels, coached by Linda Mariotti. Their coach was a silver medalist with the Nexxice team at the World Championships in 2012. The team featured their program on a three-time mix of the same song, Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box. The Frost Fairies team finished second with a total of 35.84 points. In fourth place, we find the Bolzano Ice Dolls with a total score of 25.74 points.
The competition ended late in the afternoon and teams, coaches and parents are looking forward to competing in upcoming competitions in Italy. Stay tuned!
