Russia and Finland in the lead after the short programs

The most expected event of the Junior synchro world started on Friday. Despite all the difficulties and obstacles, World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships 2020 is taking place in Nottingham right now. 19 teams arrived in the UK to do their best and present the result of hard work they have done during the season 2019-2020.


The 13th of March was the day of the short programs.

As tradition goes, competition has started with the opening ceremony, bright and energetic. There was a festive atmosphere on the stands: fans of the teams waved national flags whistled, blew the reedpipes and screams, trying to support their favorites.

The support groups from Finlandia and Canada were most numerous, Sweden fans were the loudest and the Russian supporters were the most creative, putting on the national costumes: kokoshniks and sundresses.

During the ice resurfacing, the presenter entertained people, for example, by congratulating them on their birthdays and even wedding days. So, the atmosphere was incredible.

Group 1
First on the ice was the team Amorice Junior from Turkey. They showed a nice program on the famous song Poker Face by Lady Gaga. They made their debut in the international arena and got 18.48 points.

Magic Junior from Hungary performed a wonderful program with interesting transitions and exciting slides. They earned 29.06 points.

The team Starlight Junior from Switzerland, which also had a debut this year, performed on the song What is love by Lennon and P. McCartney. Their wonderful performance gave 25.58 points to them. 




Group 2
The second group turned out very danceable! The team Iceskateers Elite Juniors from Australia presented a real Irish dance, making the audience dance with them, and earned 29.22 points in short.

By an amazing Sirtaki, team Harmonia Junior from the Czech Republic literally moved the spectators to sunny Greece. They got 34.29 in short.

The Team Mirum had good growth in comparison with the last season. They emotionally performed on the music Voodoo Rag. Four very offensive falls didn’t spoil the impression, however, they didn’t allow them to get high scores. The team had 16.33 points in short.

The next team on the ice was Team Zagreb Snowflakes Junior. The impressive swing brought to them 25.61 points. 



Group 3
The Team Illuminettes Junior from the Netherlands opened the third group. Their short program was full of interesting movements, slides, and steps. Their scores had 28.89 points.

The German Team Berlin Junior had a pretty performance on the song Lone Digger by Caravan Palace and earned 31, 70 points.

The team Seaside from Sweden presented a program with soft skating, vivid emotions and movements emphasizing the idea of the program. Their scores were 50.60 points.

Ice Fire Junior is a growing and beautiful team from Poland. They presented a lyrical program on the song My Immortal, Wake Me Up Inside by Evanescence and took 41.39 points. 

The appearance of the Team Mystique caused a real surge of emotions on the stands. The technical, but the emotional team performed on the high technical level with good skating skills and unusual choreography and got 69.72 points, finishing 4th.

Team Icicles Junior from Great Britain was warmly received by the public. The audience supports their team during the whole performance. So, the athletes did their best to please the audience. They performed well and got 33.11 points.




Group 4
The situation began to heat up by the final group of skaters. The Finnish Team Fintastic showed a dynamic program that was full of interesting movements and details. Their confident performance gave to them 73.79 points and the 3rd place.

The ambitious Russian team Crystal Ice Junior confidently came out on the ice. They showed strong and powerful skating transmitted the character and the idea of the music. The audience almost waltzed with the girls from Russia. The team got 75.93 and came second after the short program.

The Team Spirit Junior from Sweden had a nice performance highlighted by the wonderful dresses. The team got 49.90.

Then, the Russian team Junost presented their tender and flying program on the Melodie by Antonín Dvorák. They skated so sensually that after their performance there was a silence in the ice rink for a moment. The team got 76.09 points and took the lead after the first day.

The Canadian team Les Suprêmes Junior performed an elegant and graceful program to the music Vogue by Madonna and earned 62.42 points.

The last but not least on the ice was the team Nexxice from Canada. They showed traditionally smooth skating and a wonderful program full of the nuances. The team earned 66.18 points and took the 5th place.



The first day of Junior Worlds was very exciting. However, and sadly, not all the teams had the opportunity to compete this year. The participation of the teams from Japan, Italy, France and more recently the USA who came back home on Friday would have made the competition more brighter. Nevertheless, the synchronized skating world is a big family, so, together everyone shows solidarity.
