At Cirque du Soleil, our mission is to offer an escape from everyday life through the delight and whimsy of our shows. We bring hope and joy to people everywhere we go. Now more than ever, we want to do our little part to spread joy, even from afar, directly to your safe spaces.

Because of the situation, we are in, we had to be creative to find ways to stay connected with our fans while we are stuck at home. 8 weeks ago we launched our Cirque du Soleil Content Hub #CirqueConnect and every Friday 3pm EST (Montreal time, it means 9 pm Friday in Paris or 5 am Saturday in Sydney) we have a special program.

Yes! Cirque du Soleil comes back again this week and invites its fans from all over the world for a one of a kind 60-minute “on-ice” special. Viewers will enjoy some of the best live show moments from Crystal and AXEL, our 2 on-ice productions, and discover world-class ice skaters and acrobats taking their frozen playground by storm with speed and fluidity as they challenge the laws of gravity with daring and outstanding performances.

Cirque du Soleil recruits athletes coming from different contexts and sports for your productions. For the past three years, the Cirque has been interested in ice skating!

Ice is an amazing playground for us. It brings speed and fluidity for unexpected acrobatics. We also loved the idea of the fusion World-class ice skaters and the best acrobats on the planet.  It creates something unique, different and truly awe-inspiring for the whole family.

Have you ever recruited former synchronized skaters?

Yes, these two productions include many former ice skaters.

You currently have two ice shows. Could you speak a little bit more about them?

Crystal is the 42nd creation of Cirque du Soleil and explores the artistic possibilities of ice for the first time. This unique production pushes boundaries of performance by combining stunning skating and acrobatic feats that defy the imagination. Watch as world-class ice skaters and acrobats take their new frozen playground with speed and fluidity as they challenge the laws of gravity with never-before-seen acrobatics. Follow Crystal, the lead character, on an exhilarating tale of self-discovery as she dives into a world of her own imagination. AXEL is the 48th original production of Cirque du Soleil, and its second on-ice experience. Cirque du Soleil invites you to an odyssey on ice in which graphics, music, skating and acrobatics come together to create a colourful, emotionally rich universe.

Join AXEL and his adrenaline-fueled crew on an exhilarating adventure as his passion for music and graphic arts takes you on an electrifying journey. In this epic fantasy, AXEL will realize that love is the source of the light that will give him the courage and strength he needs to overcome any obstacle and make his wildest dreams come true.

AXEL is a truly inspiring experience for the whole family, reminding each of us how important it is to believe in our dreams. As well as stunning figure skating and circus arts on ice, AXEL is a show set to an upbeat musical score packed with original pop compositions and a handful of unique takes on famous hits, all performed live by AXEL and his band. The creative team drew inspiration from the energy and excitement of arena concerts and sports events to create an electro-pop circus show on ice.

A few fun facts:

All types of skates are used in the show including figure skates, ice dance, and hockey skates. Those used by figure skaters have toe picks for control and flatter blades while hockey skate blades are curved for maneuverability and speed.

To achieve the look of many pairs of skates throughout the show, the Cirque du Soleil created covers that zips on and off the skates. The coverings have been painted so they have the same look as the shoes.
